Edmund English was born in Ireland on Nov. 16, 1841. In April 1861, he joined the 2nd New Jersey Infantry Regiment in Newark, N.Y. and was mustered in as Corporal of the Co. C.. He later was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. The regiment, part of Kearney's Brigade, was attached to the Army of the Potomac and took part in the 1st battle of Bull Run (1861), Peninsular, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Second Bull Run, Chancellorville, and Gettysburg campaigns, operations in the Shenandoah Valley and at the Appomatox Court House. In August, 1865 Edmund English received the appointment of the 2nd Lieutenant of the 7th Regiment of Veteran Volunteers. In 1891, English received a Medal of Honor, for his bravery at the Battle of the Wilderness (1864).
