William G. Thompson, S.J., was born in 1930 in Detroit, Michigan. After graduating from high school in 1948 Thompson entered the Society of Jesus. He took his final vows in 1966. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Loyola University Chicago in 1953 and 1956, and a Licentiate in Sacred Tehology (S.T.L.) from West Baden College in 1962. Thompson also earned a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (S.S.L.) and Doctor of Sacred Scripture (S.S.D.) from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome in 1965 and 1969. He taught at the Jesuit School of Theology from 1967 to 1981 and the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola from 1971 until his death in 1996. He published numerous books and articles on the Gospels and was a prolific lecturer.
