A Grayville, Illinois businessman whose grandfather started the sawmill and lumber business in that town. Mr. Carey remained in the lumber business. Some of this collection was discovered in the course of tearing down old buildings and belonged to early settlers and businessmen in Grayville, one of whom, Daniel R. Jacobs was a member of the Philanthropic Lodge which was first started in New Harmony, Indiana in 1825. He operated a "Rural Retreat" where travelers and guests could stay. Thomas Matthews was another Grayville businessman operating a general store. Mary Rigall owned the Rigall Hotel in Grayville.
