Waite W. Embree was born in DeKalb, Illinois in 1905. His father owned a local lumber company. Waite worked for his father and, later, at the DeKalb Wurlitzer plant. His interests in local and railroad history and photography, resulted in a collection of photographs, papers and publications. He died in 1962, survived by his wife and son.

Photographs, publications and blueprints were collected by Waite W. Embree.

Embree systematically photographed rail rolling stock in the Midwest and added to his own photos by collecting others. Northern Illinois University archivist, J. Joseph Bauxar, added to Embree's railroad photo and publication collection by collecting several railroad publications himself.
