Founded 12 Oct. 1944 by Margaret ("Marty") Mann as the National Committee for Education on Alcoholism, to promote the treatment of alcoholism as a disease rather than a moral failing, and to establish community organizations that would operate "information centers" as well as procure beds in hospitals for alcoholics; name changed to National Council on Alcolism (NCA) ca. 1950, and finally to National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency in 1990. According to its current mission statement, NCADD "fights the stigma and the disease of alcoholism and other drug addictions", via political advocacy and service to its affiliated organizations.
