Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1925. He was signed by the New York Yankees in 1942, but his baseball career was interrupted by war service. From 1946 until the mid-1960s he played for the Yankees, and later served as coach and manager before he was fired by club owner George Steinbrenner in 1985. At various other times in his career Berra coached for the New York Mets and the Houston Astros.
