Beard, Belle Boone, 1898-1984
Variant namesBelle Boone Beard (1898-1984) was a noted centenarian researcher and professor of gerontology. She was born in Boones Mill, Va., graduated from Lynchburg College and then earned a Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr. Dr. Beard proposed and attended the first White House Conference on Aging. She taught at Sweet Briar College where she was a professor and the chairman of the Department of Sociology, Vanderbilt University and New Mexico Highlands University where she was a visiting professor, and the University of Georgia where she was a research scholar.
