Born Ella Louise Guerber in Allentown, Penn., Dec. 4, 1900. Graduated from Cedar Crest College and received a library degree from Columbia University.
Beginning in 1923, she worked in the reference dept. at the Denver Public Library, and there met Willa Cather in 1925. Their friendship lasted until Cather's death in 1947. In 1926 she moved to a position at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in N.Y. Married Bryson Burroughs, Curator of Paintings at the museum, in 1928. Bryson Burroughs died in 1934. After retiring from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she moved to Baltimore and lived with Grace Frank, widow of the classicist Tenney Frank. She died in Princeton, N.J., in 1985.
