Professor of engineering, Arizona State University.

Born in 1906, Lucile B. Kaufman graduated from the University of Colorado in 1927 with a degree in Mechanical engineering. That year she became the first woman to be inducted into the American Society of Mechanical Engineering. Prior to coming to Arizona State College in 1952, she worked for private companies, the Works Project Administration, operated vending machine routes, and spent time as a sister in a convent. At ASC she taught in Industrial Arts and Engineering, and developed a four-year program in design technology. In 1971, she retired as Assistant Professor Emeritus of Engineering. Throughout her many-faceted career, she has encountered bias against women in fields dominated by men, and has thus developed considerable interest in women's issues.
