John James Ryan was born in Ireland on July 31, 1843. He was brought to the United States as a child and entered the Society of Jesus in 1857. His earliest training was at the Frederick (Md.) Novitiate followed by studies in philosophy at Boston College and Georgetown University. After teaching for several years at the College of the Holy Cross and Loyola College, Baltimore, he went to Woodstock College in Maryland for theological studies. He was ordained in 1873. Father Ryan taught at Georgetown University (1875-1878), Boston College (1879), and the College of the Holy Cross (1880-1890). He returned to Loyola College, Baltimore, in 1891, and, but for several years spent at St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia and Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., remained at Loyola until his death on Dec. 16, 1913.
