Warehouse and forwarding business founded in 1810 by Jacob Townsend, Alvin Bronson, and Sheldon Thompson, operating in Oswego, Lewiston, and Black Rock. Before the War of 1812, and for several years after, Townsend, Bronson & Co. and Porter, Barton & Co. conducted almost all the transportation business on the Great Lakes, including salt, furs, Indian annuities, and military supplies.
