The Glasgow University Oriental Society was instituted at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1880 with the aim of the study of the language and literatures of the east. The society met for reading and discussing papers twice a year in April and October. From its inception in 1880 until 1978 the society's membership consisted of professional and semi-professionals. In 1978 the society decided to widen its membership to include interested laymen. In 2002, the society appeared to no longer exist.
