Herbert Edward Salter

Herbert Edward Salter (1863-1951), historian, was born in London on 6 February 1863. He was educated at Wimborne Grammar School, Winchester College and New College, Oxford. He was ordained deacon in 1888, and priest in 1889, and was Vicar of Shirburn, South Oxfordshire, 1899-1909. He was a research fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford, 1919-1939. Salter was an authority on the history of Oxford. He died at Broad Oak, Sturminster Newton, Dorset, on 23 April 1951.
