Butler; wrote Calling Dr. Kildare (1940) and its sequels, and worked on films based on them; published poetry, The village street and other poems (1922) and Dionysus in Hades (1931); killed while a war correspondent for Harper's at Santa Maria Infante, Italy, May 12, 1944.
