In 1900, the NP purchased the Brainerd and Northern Minnesota Railway Company. In 1903, the NP organized the Minnesota and International Railway Company, which took over the track and facilities of the Brainerd and Northern Minnesota road, and was operated as an independent subsidiary of the NP. The Minnesota and International connected the timber, farm, and resort areas of north-central Minnesota with the NP main line to the industrial centers of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
