International Union, United Automobile, Aircraft, and Agricultural Implement Workers of America. Region 3.

Hide Profile

UAW Region 3, which is headquartered in Indianapolis, can be traced back to the organizing efforts which began in the early 'thirties in the Studebaker and Bendix plants in South Bend. When the UAW-CIO was formed they transferred from AFL representation which had proven ineffective, and were among the earliest UAW locals. Region 3, comprising Indiana and southern Illinois, was established in 1937.

Region 3 has some unique characteristics: the majority of locals in the Region are small, often parts suppliers to major corporations, and have fewer than 200 members; also, none of the large corporations whose workers are represented by the UAW in Region 3 have their headquarters in the Region.

From the description of UAW Region 3 records, 1950-1971, (bulk 1964-1968). (Wayne State University, Archives of Labor & Urban). WorldCat record id: 32320982
