Originally from Boston, Mass., Thomas T. Seward went to Calif. in 1849 to mine for gold in Yuba City and along the Kern River. Later, he moved to San Francisco, where he was a volunteer with the Tiger Engine Fire Company. He died in 1855, fighting a fire in San Francisco's first distillery.
