Jason Smith was a private in the 35th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment from September 1862 to July 1864. However, from May to September of 1863, he was in the provost guard of the Second (2nd) Division of the IX (9th) Corps. He was then at Crab Orchard, Department (Dept.) of the Ohio, in the hospital and later in the provost force on guard there. At the start of the Virginia campaign of 1864, he was sent back to the 35th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and served there until his death on June 25, 1864.

Alonzo Smith was the brother of Jason Smith and was a private with Battery L, 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery from 1856 to 1862.
