Arthur E. Du Bois was born on Jan. 7, 1904, in Bethel, New York. He graduated with a B.S. degree from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. in 1924. He received his M.A. degree from Syracuse University and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. Du Bois began his career as an English instructor at Syracuse University in 1924 and left in 1928 to study at the University of Chicago under a technological fellowship. He was appointed assistant and associate professor of English at Duquesne University in 1934, and was an assistant professor of English at the University of Louisiana from 1944-1946. He began teaching at Kent State University in 1946 and stayed until his retirement at the age of 61 in 1963. He wrote many articles and poems for professional publications and was an authority on 19th century English literature. Du Bois died on Dec. 25, 1965.
