The American Forensic Association was started in 1949 by a group of instructors attending an annual meeting for the Speech Association of America in Chicago. In 1950, there was an annual meeting where the North Central Accrediting Association proposed that extracurricular speech activities be eliminated from high schools. The AFA successfully countered this effort. In 1964, the AFA founded The Journal of the American Forensic Association which in 1988 was renamed Argumentation and Advocacy: The Journal of the American Forensic Association.
