Henry Ives Baldwin was born in Saranac Lake, NY in 1896. He studied forestry in Scandanavia and Germany before receiving a master's degree and Ph. D. from the Forestry School at Yale University. Baldwin worked as a forester for the Brown Company of Berlin from 1924 to 1932. In 1933 he became New Hampshire's first State Research Forester at the Caroline Fox Forest in Hillsboro. His research projects included work on forest tree seeds and Jack pines, and he wrote a comprehensive guide to the Monadnock region of New Hampshire. Regarded as the state's "most respected forester and naturalist," Baldwin published and lectured frequently and participated in numerous organizations concerned with forest conservation. An avid outdoorsman, he also played a pioneering role in the history of American skiing.
