John J. Van Alstyne was a merchant in Rensselaer County. He formed business partnerships with Edward Fitch and Jacob Schemerhorn. The three men were also related through marriage between the families. The mercantile firm dealt largely in commodities such as beef, corn and pork, but also sold other items found in most mercantile establishments, including cloth, hardware and other supplies.
