Joyce Butler was born in Portland, Me., on June 27, 1933. She received her A.B. degree from Boston University in 1955, and was a founding member of the Society of Maine Archivists. From 1980-1995 Ms. Butler was Curator of Manuscripts and Exhibitions at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Me., and in 1993 was named Citizen of the Year by the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport Chamber of Commerce. She was the Curator of Museum Collections at the Maine Historical Society from 1996-2000. Ms. Butler lives in Kennebunk, Me., where she has been Town Historian since 1990. She is the author of seven books and a contributor to eight others. She has also written numerous articles for newspapers, magazine, and scholarly publications, and is the recipient of a Certificate of Commendation from the American Association for State and Local History (1981). Ms. Butler was awarded the Neal Allen award in 2004 by the Maine Historical Society.
