He was born in Abbe or Abbeville, South Carolina, and married Nancy Elvira (Latimar) Mattison (1840?-). Nancy Latimar was widowed and living with her parents, Stephen and Ellen Latimar, in Abbeville, South Carolina in 1880. Nancy Elvira Mattison was still alive in 1920 and living in Abbeville, South Carolina with her daughter, C. A. (Mattison) Jamerson (1865?-). Additional biographical information about William Mattison has not been determined.
