Zoology was first taught at the University of Minnesota within the College of Agriculture beginning in 1871. In 1881, zoology became a course of study within the College of Science, Literature and the Arts. The first reference to a Department of Animal Biology occurs in 1893. In 1927 the Board of Regents voted to authorize a name change from Department of Animal Biology to Department of Zoology. In 1965, the Department of Zoology was moved to the newly established College of Biological Sciences. The Department of Zoology was disbanded in 1976, with its curriculum and professors moving to other departments within the College of Biological Sciences.

Nachtrieb, professor of animal biology and zoologist with the Minnesota Geographical Survey. The first reference to a Department of Animal Biology occurs in 1893 (Minutes of the Board of Regents).
