Larry King Monteith was born in 1933 in Bryson City, North Carolina. In 1989, Monteith became Interim Chancellor, and in 1990 was selected as permanent Chancellor, a position he held until 1998. During Monteith's tenure, enrollment reached a new high, and the College of Textiles was relocated to Centennial Campus. NC State received nationwide recognition and assumed a prominent role in research and education, partly as a result of research grants and fellowships.
