John C. Beatty was born April 13, 1919 in Washington, D.C. After serving in World War II, Beatty attended and graduated from Columbia University Law School. From 1948 to 1970, he engaged in general trial practice in Portland, Oregon. Beatty also served in many civic and professional organizations, including the Oregon Board of Bar Examiners, Portland City Club, and the Oregon State Civil Service Commission. He was appointed to the Portland School Board, serving twice as chairman. In 1970, Governor Tom McCall appointed Beatty to fill a circuit court vacancy. He served on the bench until his retirement in 1985.
