Dale O. Smith (b. 1911, Reno, Nev.-d. Jan. 5, 1998), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from West Point in 1934 and completed flying training shortly thereafter. In 1938 he was assigned to Hawaii as engineering officer and test pilot. At the outset of World War II, he commanded the 20th Squadron, 2nd Bomb Group, and until 1943 served as group executive officer, group commander, and assistant chief of staff of the Army Air Forces Anti-Submarine Command under Navy control. He later commanded a B-17 group, the 384th, in England, flying 31 combat missions. For two years in the 1950s, General Smith was a member of the National Security Council Planning Board, and in 1957 assumed command of the 2nd Air Division in Saudi Arabia. The next year he was transferred to the Far East, assuming command of the 313th Air Division on Okinawa. In 1961 he began service as special assistant to the Joint Chiefs for Arms Control, and in 1963 became the Air Force member of the Joint Strategic Survey Council. He retired in 1964.
