Darius Chapin, carpenter and Civil War soldier, was born in Antwerp (Jefferson County}, New York, July 6, 1819. He was married to Elmira Hoard of Westminster, Massachusetts, May 13, 1841. They had five children and lived in Russell (Saint Lawrence County), New York for many years, where his business was also situated. He died, September 25, 1885 at Richville, New York. Elmira Chapin had passed away the previous year.

During the Civil War, Darius Chapin served in the 1st New York Regiment of Light Artillery. He mustered in as sergeant of Company D in November 1861. He was promoted to quartermaster sergeant of Company D in September 1862. He was discharged in April 1864 in order to take up promotion as 2nd lieutenant. He attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant of Quartermaster before mustering out of service in June 1865.
