Elizabeth Jo Anne Smart Drane of Raleigh, North Carolina was a student of the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro), graduating in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. Upon being admitted in 1956, Drane made history as one of the first two African Americans to be accepted as full-time students at WCUNC, which was formerly an all-white college. During her time as a student, Drane was a member of the University Sermon Committee, Junior-Senior Invitations Committee, Inter-Collegiate Council, and the Dorm Committee. Later, Drane was also a member of the Class of 1960's 50th Reunion Committee, which was held in February, 2010.
