Buffalo Seminary (N.Y.)

Established in 1851 as The Buffalo Female Academy by a group of prominent Buffalo men, who saw a need for local educational opportunity for women.

Johnson Cottage, the former home of Buffalo's first mayor, was chosen as the residence of the school's first head, Charles E. West. Classes were also held there until a school building, Goodell Hall, was constructed in 1852. In 1889 the school's name was changed to The Buffalo Seminary. In 1901 the Seminary moved its quarters to the third floor of the Twentieth Century Club. Two years later, L. Gertrude Angell was named head of the school; she retired in 1952, after almost a half century of leadership. In 1906 the school took over the former Heathcote School. The present Bidwell Parkway property was acquired for the Seminary by its Graduates Association, which also raised the capital to construct the school building, opened in September, 1909. The school is governed by a board of trustees.
