Organized in 1902, as the City Federation of Women's Clubs. In 1904 it changed its name to the Cleveland Federation of Women's Clubs. In 1930 it became the Federation of Women's Clubs of Greater Cleveland. Its purpose has always been to coordinate the educational, civic and welfare activities of women's clubs in the Cleveland area.

The Federation of Women's Clubs of Greater Cleveland began as the City Federation of Women's Clubs in 1902. Following its motto, "Unity and Service," the organization has undertaken numerous projects, including the promotion of the pasteurization of milk, the feeding of undernourished children, the planting of trees in downtown Cleveland, and various programs designed to prevent crime and foster world peace.
