Hide Profile

The nineteen adults who signed the charter for Ebenezer were all Swedish-speaking people born in Finland (except two women born in Sweden). Most had settled in the Midwest before coming to Hartford, known as “Swede Town” for nearly forty years. The first pastor was the Rev. John Gullans. Zion Hall was the meeting place for many years, but the congregation desired to relocate on Lake Stevens. In 1949 they set a goal to become a single congregation parish. They established a building fund and sought assistance from the Board of American Missions. In July on 1953 construction began on the present site, and services were held in the partially completed building beginning on Christmas, 1953. Dedication was held October 24, 1954. Rev. Earl Anderson returned to serve Ebenezer in 1955. This was a period of growth which resulted in the construction of the education/administration wing.
