Black, Emmett,
According to a document written by Mrs. Leguin (located in the S.M. Friendship Club file in the archives), The Sierra Madre Community Friendship Club was organized on Oct. 1, 1947 under the guidance of Mrs. Frederick Oliver and Mrs. Cardiff of the Pasadena Friendship Club. Mrs. Alice Sedgeman began the club in Sierra Madre and became its organizer and program chairman. The initial purpose of the club was to unite people of sixty years of age and older to enjoy shared tastes of music, lectures, and poetry. The City of Sierra Madre offered the club the City Park House (now the Senior Citizen's Center in Memorial Park) in which to hold its monthly meetings.

The first meeting took place in the parlor of the Congregational Church, and was sponsored by the Men's Community Club under the club president, Mr. Elmer Green. The society established in its first constitution that its purpose was to collect, preserve, display objects and documents relating to the city's founding. In 1950, the Historical Society published 500 copies of the first volume of the "Annals of Sierra Madre".
