William Codman Sturgis (1862-1942) was a botanist specializing in the Myxomycetes. He was also active as a layperson in the Episcopal Church. He earned his Ph.D. at Harvard College in 1887. From 1891-1901 he was a plant pathologist with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and a lecturer at Yale School of Forestry. He was Dean of the School of Forestry at Colorado College from 1904-1917. From 1917-1927 he was Educational Secretary of the Board of Missions of the Episcopal Church in New York City. From 1929-1931 he was lecturer at the College of Preachers in Washington, D.C. He was warden at St. Martin's House, Bernardsville, N.J. from 1934-1938. He died in Annisquam, Mass. in 1942. The New York Botanical Garden purchased his 3200 collections of Myxomycetes along with his notes, drawings and correspondence in 1938 at the recommendation of Robert Hagelstein, Honorary Curator of Myxomycetes.
