Lieutenant General (LTG) Donald S. Pihl was born in San Francisco, California (CA). He was commissioned into the United States (U.S.) Army through Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and went into the U.S. Army Armor School in August 1959. In January 1963 Pihl went to the U.S. Army Quartermaster School. He was in Vietnam from March 1968 to May 1969 first as Executive Officer, 1st Battalion, 77th Armor, then as Assistant S-3 Officer (Operations) and later S-1 Officer (Personnel), both with the 1st Infantry Brigade, 5th Infantry Division.

From 1985-1989, Pihl served as Commanding General of the 9th Infantry Division. He was Military Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Research, Development and Acquisition), Office of the Secretary of the Army from May 1987 to June 1990. Throughout his career, Pihl attended the following: the University of CA, the Armed Forces Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. He retired 30 June 1990.
