Originally from South Dakota and Iowa. Graduated from Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing. Served in the United States Army 1967-1970 and was stationed At Fort Polk and later Vietnam. Earned a master's degree in nursing and became a certified family nurse practitioner. Worked in El Paso and Fort Worth, Texas as a nurse and was later employed by Texas Woman's University as an associate professor at the College of Nursing.
