Jesse Stuart (1906-1984) was born in Greenup County, Kentucky and set most of his stories in Appalachia. His works include the poetry book Man with a Bull-Tongue Plow (1934), novels Trees of Heaven (1940), Taps for Private Tussie (1943), and the collection of short stories Tales from Plum Grove Hills. The Jesse Stuart Foundation, Inc. was chartered in 1979 in Louisville, Ky., as a non-profit organization. It controls the rights to Stuart's published and unpublished literary works. It also functions as a regional press and reprints many of Stuart's out-of-print books along with other books that focus on Kentucky and Appalachia.
