William G. Bradshaw served as Assistant Director of Administration and Finance from August 1983. He was promoted to Associate Director of Administration and Finance in May 1984, and he served as such until August 1987. As associate director, Bradshaw was responsible for the overall administrative operations of the museum, including special projects, special events, security, library, personnel, buildings and grounds, data control and accounting. Major projects undertaken included construction of the Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden and development of the museum's master plan.

The Office of the Associate Director was created in 1974 by Director William Agee. The Associate Director was responsible for the overall administrative operations of the MFA,H. All departments reported to the Associate Director, who in turn reported to the Director.

David B. Warren, then Curator of Bayou Bend, was the first appointed to the position of Associate Director. In his new position Warren would also remain responsible for overseeing the long term policies and operations of Bayou Bend, working closely with Miss Ima Hogg and the Bayou Bend Advisory Committee.

After Peter C. Marzio assumed Directorship of the MFA,H in 1982, the number of staff began to grow and, consequently, the organizational structure began to change. One such change was that the administrative functions were passed to the newly created position of Assistant Director of Administration in 1983. This position was given responsibility for the financial planning and controls of the MFA,H and its overall effective operation. The responsibility for Bayou Bend and curatorial and educational functions remained with Warren. In 1984, the title of Assistant Director of Administration was changed to Associate Director of Administration. At that point, Warren also assumed responsibility for the Registrar's Office, and the title of Associate Director, which he had retained, was changed to Associate Director of Collections and Exhibitions. The following year, the Associate Director of Administration position was renamed the Associate Director of Administration and Finance. William Bradshaw held this position under its various titles from its creation through August, 1987.

In 1984, the Assistant Director of Special Projects position was created and filled by Celeste M. Adams, who also retained the title and duties of Curator of Oriental Art. At this point, the position of Chairman, Department of Art History and Education, which Adams had held was eliminated.

The Assistant Director of Special Projects reported to Bradshaw as did the Director of Special Events, Security Director, Librarian, Personnel and Office Services Director, Building Superintendent, and Controller. The Assistant Director of Special Projects headed the Design and Publication Departments, as well as special projects as assigned. The latter included the reinstallation of the permanent collection in the Upper Brown Gallery, the construction of the Cullen Sculpture Garden, and the development of the MFA,H Master Plan. In 1986 the position's title changed to Assistant Director, Special Projects, Design and Publications. While remaining part of the Associate Director's Office, Adams began to report directly to the Director. The position of Associate Director, Special Projects, Design and Publications was eliminated when Adams' tenure at the MFA,H ended in 1993.

The MFA,H's current Associate Director of Finance and Administration, Gwendolyn Goffe, began her duties in July, 1988. Departments reporting to Goffe include Accounting, Personnel and Office Services, Building and Grounds, Security, Information Systems, Retail, Admissions and Visitor Services, Exhibit Production, Audio-Visual and Special Events. Among her most notable projects have been the renovation and reinstallation of Bayou Bend (including the Tenneco installation), the renovation of the off-site storage facility, the construction of the Montrose Building, and the renovation of the Glassell School of Art. Most importantly, the responsibility for the construction of the Beck Building, which will double the MFA,H installation space, rests with the current Office of the Associate Director.
