Dr. Richard Arthur Bolt (1880-1959), an authority on child health care, received an M.D. from University of Michigan (1906) and Doctorates in Public Health from Johns Hopkins (1923) and University of California (1924). Bolt was medical director of U.S. Indemnity College (Tsing Hua College), Peking (1911-1916). He and his wife, Beatrice Rebecca French Bolt (1881-1974), carried on a prolific correspondence that described these years in detail. On his overseas trips Dr. Bolt took photographs that he later used for lecture presentations. Bolt was chief of Bureau of Child Hygiene, Cleveland Department of Public Health (1917-18), instructor at Case Western Reserve University (1916-1920), lecturer at Johns Hopkins University (1920-1925), consultant for United States Children's Bureau (1924-1937), assistant professor for child hygiene, University of California (1925-1929), associate professor, Case Western Reserve University (1929-1945) and lecturer in maternal and child health at University of California (1945-1948). He studied child health in Germany (1933) and was a member of White House Conference on Children (1939). Bolt was author of numerous monographs on public health topics all of which are represented in Series IV and VI of papers. Series I contains an unfinished autobiography of Dr. Bolt. Beatrice Rebecca French Bolt, a graduate of Stanford University (1905), was a meticulous diarist, genealogist and record keeper. Her diaries form principal portion of Series II.
