In 1928, Eddie Arning was diagnosed as a schizophrenic and committed to the Austin State Hospital, where he spent most of his life. He began drawing with wax crayons and craypas in the mid-1960s. The subjects of most of his pictures were suggested by magazine illustrations and advertisements for Kentucky Fried Chicken, Newport cigarettes, and other consumer goods.
