Joseph M. Chamberlain was an educator, curator and planetarium/museum director. He was assistant curator 1952- and astronomer 1953-1968 at the American Museum of Natural History-Hayden Planetarium; and assistant director of the AMNH 1966-1968, under director James A. Oliver.
Chamberlain graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy with a B.A. in nautical science and served as a navigator in the U.S. Navy, 1945-1946. He earned a doctorate in educational administration in 1962. As chairman of the Hayden Planetarium, he was in charge of its publications and research stations, and led expeditions to observe and study eclipses. Chamberlain also developed career instructional materials for the American Astronomical Society's Education Ccommittee. In 1968 he became director of the Adler Planetarium and Astronomical Museum in Chicago, and remained there until his retirement in 1991.
