Louis Prescott Dolbeare was born in 1916. He was the son of Louis Urban Dolbeare and Caro Elizabeth Prescott. He graduated from Amherst in the Class of 1940. After receiving a Masters in City Planning from Harvard Graduate School of Design, Dolbeare worked as a planning administrator for the Philadelphia Board of Education and the Bucks Company from 1952 to 1954. In 1956, Dolbeare married Cushing Niles. Their children are Mary and Louis Niles. Louis Dolbeare forged a life-long friendship with Charles Rogers, Professor of Fine Arts and Dramatics, who taught at Amherst College from 1942 to 1970. In 1990, after several years of planning, Dolbeare organized a special celebration for Rogers that was held at Amherst College.
