Vincent A. Hartgen was an artist, educator and museum director. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania on Jan. 10, 1914, he was the son of William J. and Jane Hadfield Hartgen. He received a B.A. in 1940 and an M.A. in fine arts in 1941 from the University of Pennsylvania. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, he came to the University of Maine in 1946 as head of the newly formed art department and curator of the university art collection. He served in this position until his retirement in 1983. He also painted and sketched extensively throughout his career and his works are represented in numerous public and private collections. Vincent A. Hartgen died on Nov. 27, 2002.
