Harry F. Shaw, Jr., was born in Crafton, West Virginia, circa 1947. He graduated from Crafton High School in 1964 and West Virginia University circa 1968; he majored in history. While a student at West Virginia, Shaw organized the Student Action Against Poverty, served as chairman of the campus Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), and was an active member of the Mountaineer Freedom Party. Among his many non-campus activities, he was the Vietnam Summer Field Secretary for West Virginia in 1967. He worked for the American Friends Service Committee as a Vietnam Volunteer and helped to organize the Southern Student Organizing Committee. He was also active in the fight for improved coal mining conditions through the Black Lung Association and Miners for Democracy.
