Attended South Carolina College, 1815-1817; admitted to the bar in 1820; elected solicitor in 1836; appointed Chancellor of South Carolina College in 1846; served as member of the state legislature, 1830-1836; native of Newberry District, S.C.; son of Daniel Caldwell and Jeanette McMaster Caldwell; also attended Mt. Bethel Academy; husband of Nancy Morgan McMorries.
