In 1903 the railroad was chartered as the San Luis Southern Railway. Regular operations began from Blanca to San Acacio, Colorado. By 1910 the rail line extended to Jarso, north of the New Mexico border. In 1924 the railroad went bankrupt. Charles Boettcher led a Denver group who purchased the company at an auction in 1928. The company was reorganized as the San Luis Valley Southern Railway. The depression curtailed expansion plans. In 1949, the owners applied to the Interstate Commerce Commission for abandonment. Residents of the San Luis Valley protested. The company was ordered to sell its assets. The residents purchased the line in 1954 and it operated as the Southern San Luis Valley Railroad. The railroad abandoned most of the line so that by 1980 the company ran less than two miles of track.
