Herbert Max Finlay Freundlich, a foremost authority on colloid chemistry, spent most of his career as a distinguished teacher and researcher at various universities in Germany. In 1934, Freundlich left Germany for political reasons, and began teaching at University College in London. He remained there as a lecturer and director of research until 1938, when he came to the University of Minnesota.
