Luis Vlez de Guevara

Luis Vlez de Guevara (1579-1644), playwright and novelist, was born at Ecija, Spain, in July 1579. After attending the University of Osuna, he joined the household of Cardinal Rodrigo de Castro, Archbishop of Seville. He saw military service in Italy before serving successively the Counts of Saldana and of Penafiel. De Guevera was a follower of Lope de Vega. He wrote over four hundred plays, including La luna de la sierra and Reinar despus de morir, and the satirical novel El diablo cojuelo . He died at Madrid on 10 November 1644.
