John Blanchard was born in West Carroll Parish, La., on January 16, 1922, the youngest of 13 children raised on a cotton farm during the Great Depression. He graduated from high school in Epps, La., in 1939, attended Northeast Junior College, then transferred to Louisiana State University in 1941. Majoring in journalism, Blanchard eventually becoming editor-in-chief of The Reveille. He also was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. After graduation he worked in public relations for ten years, then for the newspaper business.
